**⚠ Verify the current spec on the eVisa portal before submitting.** Indonesia does not publish English-language photo specs on a single canonical page — confirm dimensions and background colour at [evisa.imigrasi.go.id](https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/) when you start your application. Visa rules and acceptance criteria can change without public notice.

## The official requirements

Almost every Indonesian visa for foreign nationals — Visa on Arrival (eVOA), Visit Visa (B211A), KITAS, KITAP, Second Home (E33G), and the working/investor streams — is now applied for through the **imigrasi e-Visa portal**. The portal needs a digital photo to a fixed spec:

- **Size:** 35×45 mm (portrait), the standard ICAO visa size
- **Background:** plain white or light-colored, evenly lit, no shadows or patterns
- **Head size:** 50–60% of the photo height, chin to crown
- **Expression:** neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open, looking straight at the camera
- **Glasses:** not allowed — frames and glare cause rejections
- **Recency:** taken within the last 6 months
- **Color:** color photo only

For the upload, the digital file must be **JPEG** (PNG accepted on most flows), at least **400×600 pixels**, and no larger than **2 MB**.

Indonesia uses **white** background for visas (not the red background associated with KTP/ID cards), and the portal expects a fresh photo — heavily edited or filtered shots are flagged.

## How to take a compliant photo

You will almost certainly take this photo in your home country before you travel. A modern phone camera is fine — the e-Visa portal fails applicants on framing and lighting far more than on camera quality. The setup:

1. Stand 1.5–2 metres in front of a plain white wall, with the same distance behind you so you don’t cast a shadow.
2. Light yourself evenly from the front — face a window. Overhead light throws shadows under the eyes and nose.
3. Have someone else take the shot from chest height, phone held straight. A selfie distorts the face and frames the head wrong for the 35×45 mm crop.
4. Look directly at the lens — neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes visible, hair off the forehead and ears.
5. Crop to 35×45 mm with the head filling 50–60% of the frame, then export as a JPEG at 400×600 pixels or above, under 2 MB.

## Why photos get rejected

The e-Visa portal and the reviewing officer bounce a predictable set of problems. Each one, and the fix:

- **Glasses left on** — the most common rejection, including prescription. Take them off.
- **Wrong head size** — must be 50–60% of photo height. A holiday-picture crop with the head at 30% fails. Re-shoot or re-crop.
- **Background not plain** — patterned curtains, doorframes, coloured walls all fail. Plain white only, no shadow behind the head.
- **Wrong dimensions** — must be 35×45 mm. A 4×6 cm home-country passport crop or a US 2×2 inch square is rejected.
- **Over-edited or filtered photo** — beauty filters and skin smoothing are flagged. Submit the original.
- **Blurry or low resolution** — under 400×600 pixels, or out of focus. Re-shoot.
- **Photo older than 6 months** — must reflect your current appearance.
- **File too large** — over 2 MB. Re-export at a lower JPEG quality.

## What to wear (and not wear)

Glasses are the trap here: many applicants assume prescription glasses are fine and upload a photo with them on, but Imigrasi treats them as an automatic rejection.

**Avoid:** glasses of any kind, hats or caps, headphones or earbuds, uniforms or military attire. A white or very pale top blends into the white background and washes out the face — wear a darker, solid colour instead. Colored or patterned contact lenses that change the iris are not allowed; clear vision-correcting contacts are fine.

**Fine:** ordinary everyday clothing in a solid mid-tone or dark colour, light makeup that keeps your everyday look, religious head coverings worn daily (the face must be fully visible from forehead to chin), and medical devices like hearing aids.

## Where to get your photo

Because the application is online and the audience is foreigners applying before they fly, the digital file matters more than a print. Common providers around the world:

| Where | Price | 35×45mm digital file | Speed | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Walgreens / CVS (US) | ~$14.99–16.99 | On request | Same day | Aimed at US passport; ask for JPEG and confirm 35×45mm |
| Boots (UK) | ~£9.99 | Yes — digital code | Same day | Standard UK ICAO 35×45mm sizing |
| Australia Post / Officeworks | ~A$17–20 | On request | Same day | Confirm 35×45mm crop |
| Local photo studio | varies | Often — ask | Same day | Most likely to hand over a JPEG without prompting |
| Pharmacy / print shop | varies | Rarely | Same day | Print-only counters don’t fit an online application |
| Online tool (this site) | $1.00 | Yes — JPEG to spec | ~2 minutes | Cropped to 35×45mm, head ratio validated |

In-store providers in most countries are aimed at the local passport market, where a print is mandatory; for an Indonesia e-Visa upload, ask for the **digital file** specifically. Photo studios are most likely to hand it over without being asked. Whichever you choose, the only thing that matters is that the photo meets every rule above.

## Submitting your photo

For foreign applicants almost all routes now go through the e-Visa portal:

**E-Visa portal (evisa.imigrasi.go.id)** — eVOA, Visit Visa (B211A), KITAS, KITAP, Second Home, and the working/investor streams are applied for online. You upload the photo as a JPEG alongside the data page of your passport. The portal checks file format, size, and dimensions at upload; an officer reviews the photo content. If it’s rejected, the officer requests a replacement and the application is held until you provide one.

**Embassy or consulate (paper)** — A few streams still allow in-person lodgement at an Indonesian mission abroad. Those require two identical 35×45 mm printed colour photos attached to the form. Check your specific visa class on the consulate’s website — the default in 2026 is the online portal.

**Visa on Arrival at the airport** — A traditional VOA paid in cash at Soekarno-Hatta or Ngurah Rai does not require an uploaded photo; your face is captured at the immigration counter. The 35×45 mm spec applies to the e-Visa lodgement only, before you fly.

## Children and special situations

**Infants and young children** follow the same 35×45 mm rules — plain white background, no toys, no pacifiers, no hands in the frame, both eyes open. Lay the baby on a plain white sheet and shoot from directly above. Children under 6 are not required to hold a perfectly neutral expression, but the face must be clearly visible and forward-facing.

**Hijab and other religious head coverings** worn daily are permitted; the face must be fully visible from chin to forehead, both edges of the face clear of fabric, and no shadow on the face.

**Glasses** must come off, even prescription. With a documented medical reason (recent eye surgery, for example), keep the lenses clear and free of reflections and be prepared to upload supporting paperwork.

**Medical devices** worn every day — hearing aids, oxygen tubes — are fine and should appear as you normally wear them.
