- Head size: Face centered and fully visible, taken from the front. ICAO MRTD biometric framing — head straight, not tilted or turned.
- Expression: Neutral expression with closed lips. Eyes open and focused on the camera.
- Glasses: Not permitted.
- Even lighting; no harsh shadows.
- Filters, beauty modes and retouching are forbidden.
- Color photo.
- Head coverings are permitted for religious reasons; check the source for conditions.
- Uniforms are restricted; check the source for exceptions.
- No earphones or wireless devices.

## Common rejection reasons

### Wrong size

The Turkish biometric passport photo must be 50×60mm. The common 35×45mm EU format is not the standard size (the MFA note accepts US 2×2 inch as a fallback, but not 35×45mm). Submitting 35×45mm causes rejection.

What to do: Use the exact 50×60mm crop.

### Wearing glasses

Eyeglasses, earrings, hats, and anything obscuring facial features are prohibited. The consulate rejects photos where glasses cover the eyes or cast shadows.

What to do: Remove glasses and accessories before taking the photo. Medical exceptions need a signed doctor's note.

### Non-white or patterned background

The background must be plain white with no pattern, texture, or shadow.

What to do: Stand in front of a plain white wall, or use our automatic background replacement.

### Non-neutral expression

A neutral expression with closed lips is required. Smiling, an open mouth, or a tilted or turned head causes rejection.

What to do: Face the camera straight on with a relaxed, neutral expression and closed lips.

### Damaged or low-quality print

The consulate will not accept damaged, wrinkled, or creased photos, or images that are blurry, too dark, or too bright.

What to do: Print on quality photo paper and keep the print flat and undamaged.

### Photo too old

The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months and reflect your current appearance.

## Turkish passport photo (pasaport): biometric requirements and where to get one

A Turkish passport photo is a biometric ICAO photo at the unusual 50x60mm size on a white background. Here is what makes one compliant, how to shoot it, and the best way to get one ready for the e-Devlet appointment you book at the Nüfus Müdürlüğü.

## The biometric requirements

A Turkish passport (pasaport) photo is a biometric photo built to the ICAO machine-readable travel document standard. That standard is what the rules below enforce, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejects a photo that misses any of them:

- **Size:** 50x60mm. This is Turkey’s biometric standard, and it is not the 35x45mm size used across the EU. At consulates abroad, the US 2x2 inch (about 51x51 mm) format is also accepted.
- **Background:** plain white, patternless. No texture, pattern, design, or shadow behind you.
- **Head:** centered, fully visible, and facing the camera straight on. The head must not be tilted forward or turned to either side. The face fills most of the frame in the biometric proportions the ICAO standard calls for.
- **Expression:** neutral, with lips closed. Both eyes open and focused on the camera.
- **Glasses:** not allowed. Earrings, hats, and other accessories are also out.
- **Recency:** taken within the last 6 months.
- **Quality:** sharp, well lit, and not too bright or too dark, printed on quality photo paper.

The 50x60mm size is the detail people get wrong most often, because it matches neither the EU nor the US format. Treat it as the first thing to confirm.

## How to take a compliant photo

A modern phone camera is good enough. Biometric photos fail on framing and lighting far more than on camera quality. The setup that works:

1. Stand a step or two in front of a plain white wall, leaving enough gap that you do not cast a shadow on it.
2. Face a window so even, natural light hits you from the front. Avoid overhead light, which throws shadows under the eyes.
3. Have someone else take it. Selfies distort facial proportions and tend to frame the head wrong for biometric capture.
4. Look straight at the lens. Keep your head level, not tilted or turned. Neutral expression, lips closed, both eyes open, hair clear of your face.
5. Crop to the 50x60mm frame with your head sized to fill most of it, or upload the shot to a tool that crops and validates against the biometric spec for you.

## Why photos get rejected

The same handful of problems bounce most Turkish passport photos. Each one, and the fix:

- **Wrong size.** A 35x45mm EU photo or an off-ratio crop is rejected. Use 50x60mm (or 2x2 inch at a consulate that accepts it).
- **Glasses left on.** Glasses are an automatic fail here, with no medical exception documented in the official guidance. Take them off, even prescription glasses.
- **Head tilted or turned.** The standard requires a straight, front-facing head. Keep it level and square to the camera, then re-shoot.
- **Background not truly white.** A cream, grey, or patterned wall reads as off-spec. Use a plain white wall or replace the background.
- **Mouth open or smiling.** Keep a neutral expression with lips closed.
- **Too dark, too bright, or blurry.** Light yourself evenly from the front and use a sharp, high-resolution file.
- **Photo older than 6 months.** It must reflect your current appearance.

## What to wear (and not wear)

Glasses are the rule applicants underestimate: Turkey bans them outright with no exception listed in the official guidance, so they have to come off even if they are prescription. Alongside that:

**Avoid:** glasses of any kind, earrings, hats or caps, and anything that covers part of the face. Hair must not fall across your eyes or cheeks. A white or very pale top can blend into the white background, so wear a darker, solid color instead.

**Fine:** normal everyday clothing and light makeup that keeps your usual look. Religious head coverings worn daily are generally accepted as long as the full face, from forehead to chin, stays visible.

Glasses are the trap. Many applicants do not realize the ban is absolute, and the official guidance lists no exception, so plan to remove them for the photo.

## Where to get your photo

You can have a Turkish passport photo taken at an approved studio, or prepare your own and bring it. Either way the photo must clear the biometric spec above before your appointment.

| Option | Cost | Biometric 50x60mm? | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Approved photo studio | Varies | Yes | Knows the 50x60mm biometric format; convenient if you are nearby |
| Photo taken at the office | Varies | Yes | Some Nüfus Müdürlüğü appointments capture the photo on site |
| DIY at home | Free | Manual | You must hit the 50x60mm crop and head size yourself, which is where most self-made photos fail |
| Online tool (this site) | $1.00 | Yes | Upload a shot, it crops to the 50x60mm biometric frame and checks head size, in about 2 minutes |

A studio is the safe default because it already knows the biometric format. If you prepare your own, the online tool removes the guesswork by cropping to the 50x60mm frame and validating the head size before you print. Whichever route you take, the only thing that matters is that the photo meets every rule above.

## The appointment and submitting your photo

Getting the photo right is half the job. The other half is the appointment.

**Book a randevu.** Turkish passport applications run through the Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Population and Citizenship office). You schedule an appointment through the e-Devlet portal rather than walking in. Book early, since slots fill up.

**Bring the photo, or have it taken there.** Bring a compliant biometric print that meets the 50x60mm spec, or use a studio the office approves. Some offices capture the photo during the appointment itself, so check what your appointment covers when you book.

**Applying from abroad.** Turkish citizens outside the country apply at a consulate. Consulates enforce the size strictly and, in addition to 50x60mm, will accept the US 2x2 inch format. Confirm your local consulate’s specifics before your visit, because submission details can vary by mission.

Whatever channel you use, a photo that clears the biometric checklist above is what keeps the appointment moving instead of sending you back for a re-shoot.
