Capture advisory: Filing Form I-485 or I-90 on or after December 12, 2025? USCIS now takes your photo at the ASC biometrics appointment, so you may not need to make one here. A pre-change filing or a non-USCIS use still needs a 2x2 photo.

- Appearance significantly changed since filing — bring documentation if your appearance at the ASC appointment differs substantially from your application photos

## US green card photo: the Dec 2025 rule that USCIS now takes it for you

Since December 12, 2025 USCIS captures your green card photo at the biometrics appointment instead of accepting one you submit, and I-485 always needs a fresh capture even if you have a recent one on file. Here is what changed, what the 2x2 spec still is, and the cases where you still supply a photo.

## The official requirements

The green card photo is the standard US 2x2 inch identity format, the same one used for passports and visas. As of late 2025 the spec is mostly background information, because of the capture-rule change in the next section, but it is the standard your ASC photo is held to and the one you meet if you fall into a case that still supplies a photo:

- **Size:** 2x2 inches (51x51 mm), square
- **Background:** plain white
- **Head size:** 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25-35 mm) from chin to crown
- **Expression:** neutral, both eyes open, looking at the camera
- **Glasses:** not allowed, even clear prescription lenses
- **Recency:** taken within the last 6 months
- **Color:** color photo

## USCIS now takes the photo (the Dec 12, 2025 rule)

The thing most green card guides still get wrong: mailed photos no longer decide anything. Per the USCIS Policy Manual update of **December 12, 2025** (policy alert PA-2025-29), USCIS “will not use or reuse self-submitted photographs” for domestic filings, including **Form I-485** (adjustment of status) and **Form I-90** (renew or replace a card). It applies to anything filed **on or after that date**.

Instead, USCIS captures your photo at the **Application Support Center (ASC)**, during the biometric services appointment where they already take your fingerprints and signature. After you file, you receive an appointment notice with a date, time, and location; the officer takes the photo there, to the correct spec, and that image is what prints on the card.

What this means in practice:

- **You no longer need to buy or make prints for the card photo.** For an I-485 or I-90 filed on or after December 12, 2025, the ASC capture is the photo; anything you mail is not used for the card. One transition-period caveat: the I-485 instructions’ evidence checklist (still the January 2025 edition as of August 2026) predates the change and continues to list photographs, so if you are following that checklist to the letter, including prints is harmless. They just will not become your card photo.
- **The appointment is the photo.** There is no upload step and no retake queue, so the only thing you control is how you show up. The `prepare-for-asc` section below is the part that still matters.
- **A missed ASC appointment is now the main cause of a delayed card photo.** Treat the notice date as a hard deadline; reschedule through your USCIS online account before the date if you cannot make it.

## Why I-485 always needs a fresh capture

The same December 2025 update added a photo-reuse rule: USCIS may reuse a biometric photo collected within the last 36 months for some forms. **I-485 is deliberately excluded from that reuse.** Adjustment of status sits on the no-reuse list alongside N-400 (naturalization), N-600 (certificate of citizenship), and I-90 (replace a green card), so even if you had biometrics taken last month for another case, your I-485 still requires a new capture at its own ASC appointment.

The practical takeaway: do not assume a recent appointment for a different form covers your green card. If you are adjusting status, expect an ASC notice and plan to attend it specifically for this application. If your I-485 is filed together with a Form I-765 work permit, the single I-485 biometrics appointment serves both, so you are not booked twice.

## How to prepare for the ASC appointment

You do not take this photo, but how you present yourself at the counter is exactly what ends up on the card, so treat the visit like a shoot:

1. **Remove glasses** before the photo is taken. The no-glasses rule applies to the ASC capture the same way it applied to mailed photos; only a documented medical exception is accepted.
2. **Wear a solid, darker top**, not white. The background is white, and a pale top softens your outline the same way it would in a self-shot.
3. **Skip hats, headphones, and anything that shadows the face.** Religious head coverings worn daily are fine if the face stays fully visible from forehead to chin.
4. **Bring the appointment notice and a government photo ID.** Without them the center can turn you away, which forfeits the slot.
5. **Arrive a few minutes early.** A neutral expression with both eyes open is all the officer needs; the capture itself takes seconds.

## What still goes wrong

Because USCIS now controls the camera, classic photo rejections (wrong size, off-white background, bad crop) are off the table. The failures that remain are about the appointment and your appearance:

- **Glasses worn at the counter.** Still the most common avoidable problem. Take them off before the capture.
- **Missed or late ASC appointment.** The single biggest cause of green card photo delay now. Reschedule in advance through your USCIS account, never by no-showing.
- **Appearance changed a lot since filing.** If you look substantially different from your application materials (major weight change, new facial hair, gender transition), bring documentation so the officer can match you confidently.
- **Filing under the old rules.** Mailing prints with a post-December-2025 I-485, or assuming an old photo will be reused, both stem from outdated guides. The capture happens at the ASC regardless.

## When you still supply your own photo

The ASC capture rule does not cover everything. You may still produce your own 2x2 photo when:

- Your I-485 or I-90 was **filed before December 12, 2025** under the old self-submission rule and your file still references mailed photos.
- You are filing a **different immigration form** that the December 2025 guidance still lets you submit a photo for; check that form’s current instructions, since the per-form list is what controls.
- You need a 2x2 photo for a **non-USCIS purpose** tied to your case, such as a travel document photo or a consular step.

In those cases the spec is the 2x2 inch photo in the first section. If you are not sure which case you fall into, our [route-by-route breakdown of who still needs printed green card photos](https://onedollarpassportphoto.com/blog/green-card-photo-prints/) covers adjustment, consular DS-260, and the DV lottery in one table. Where to produce one:

| Where | Price | Speed | Digital file | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pharmacy photo counter (CVS, Walgreens) | ~$15-17 | same day | print, file on request | a walk-in print if a pre-Dec-2025 file needs one |
| Warehouse/retail photo (Costco, Walmart) | ~$6-8 | same day | print | cheapest in-store print |
| Our online tool | $1, or $5 with the print sheet | ~2 min | 2x2 JPEG; print sheet in the $5 pack | a digital file for an upload-based non-ASC step |

For a current I-485 or I-90, though, the honest answer is the simplest one: do not buy a photo at all. USCIS takes it for you at the appointment.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I still mail two photos with my I-485?** No, not if you file on or after December 12, 2025. USCIS takes the photo at your ASC biometrics appointment. Mailing prints is unnecessary.

**USCIS already took my biometrics last year for another case. Can they reuse that photo for my green card?** No. I-485 is on the no-reuse list, so adjustment of status always requires a new capture even inside the 36-month reuse window that applies to other forms.

**What if I cannot attend my ASC appointment?** Reschedule before the date through your USCIS online account. A no-show is the most common cause of a delayed card photo and can stall the whole application.

**Can I wear my glasses for the ASC photo?** No. The no-glasses rule still applies, including clear prescription lenses. The only exception is a documented medical reason, and even then the eyes must be fully visible with no glare.

**My I-485 was filed before the December 2025 change. What do I do?** Follow the instructions your file was built on. A pre-change application may still reference mailed 2x2 photos; if so, supply them to the spec in the first section.
